Copper networks might be on their way out to be replaced by optical fiber, which offers numerous advantages over copper and other metal-based wires. The way things are changing it seems that the fiber optic technology is future proof.

In the past and even today, the world has relied heavily on copper cables and copper networks because it is easy to use in terms of installation and maintenance, copper is extremely inexpensive. However, its advantages are no longer able to compete with the numerous strengths of fiber optic technology.  Over the last few years, fiber optic networks have greatly revolutionized data communication such as the internet, cable television, security, and more because it is faster, more secure, and more reliable than copper.

In this article, we discuss the five main reasons why our fiber optic network installation experts believe the fiber optic is future proof:

Speed

The biggest reason why businesses and home users alike are willing to make the switch to FTTH is the higher bandwidth and better speeds fiber optic can provide.

As the demand for IoT or the Internet of Things increases and the amount of HD content including videos and a large amount of data generated and transmitted rises, it is becoming more and more evident that the need for bandwidth and speed will increase too.

Copper cables do not have the capability to cater to these increasing demands. Conversely, fiber optic has the amazing ability to provide 1000s times more bandwidth and greater security, reliability, and integrity of data over longer distances, which will meet the needs of the future.

Integrity

Data traveling in the fiber optic cables in the form of light, the fibers of the optical fiber are made out of glass or plastic through a unique manufacturing process, which allows light to travel through the fiber in the form of waves.

On the other hand, copper cables transmit data in the form of electric current, which is more susceptible to security and damage issues. Because fiber optics has no electricity or heat, therefore the integrity of the data in is not compromised due to temperature and electromagnetic fields.

Security

The data in fiber optic cable is a lot more secure because light signals are harder to intercept and read. Nowadays, fiber optic cables have a built-in monitor and alter for data loss.

Adaptability

One of the most noteworthy advantages of fiber optics is their ability to meet the growing and changing needs of businesses, industries, and end consumers. Copper has been able to cater to the needs of the consumers for a long time, but unfortunately, it seems that the requirement for higher speeds, better bandwidth and improved security over long distances have exceeded the capabilities of copper.

The unique technology of optical fiber gives it the ability to grow with the data transmission needs of the future with its limitless bandwidth and speed potential.

Affordability

One of the biggest obstacles for fiber optic adoption on a broader scale has been the expense of production and installation. However, technological advancements in fiber optic production have come up with ingenious cost-cutting manufacturing solutions that are bringing down the costs. Additionally, optical fiber cables have better longevity, which saves more money in the long term compared to copper cables.

It’s great that you talked about how fiber optics has no electricity or heat, therefore the integrity of the data is not compromised due to temperature and electromagnetic fields. We just moved to a new house and we’re thinking of applying for an internet connection for it. We should look at internet service plans carefully and select the one that would best suit our needs.
