How 5G Impact Fiber Optic Cabling

Cellular Networks have come a long way. From the introduction of cellular networks (First Generation) to the first text message service (Second Generation) to the introduction of the service that allowed the users to access information from their cell phones (Third Generation) to high-speed internet access for seamless video streaming, gaming, and such other services. But now 5G generation is in its testing stage, and it is almost ready to be launched by the end of 2019. The announcement of the launch of the 5G network has spread like fire in the woods, and tech savvies are anxiously waiting for its launch.

5G will take cellular networks to a whole new level because it will offer ten times faster internet speed than 4G, lower latency, improved data connectivity, high reliability, and higher data rates. 5G is widely compared to fiber optic, especially because 5G will offer wireless connectivity, whereas fiber optic is reliant on the fiber optic cabling network. Although fiber optic offers WiFi broadband internet, WiFi has a limited range, and its server requires cable connectivity. Apart from wireless connectivity, 5G offers several other advantages that will cause trouble for fiber optic in the long-run.

High-Frequency Signals

5G network will use high-frequency signals that will ensure a much superior performance as compared with the low-frequency signals that were used in the other 4 Generations of Cellular Networks.

Low Latency

One of the biggest problems faced by 4G users was the delay between sending the information to receiving information. 5G will offer lower latency, which means the duration between sending and receiving data will be significantly improved. Due to low latency, the users will experience zero to no lags in streaming 4K videos and 3D gaming.

Higher Bandwidth

FTTH is widely known for its high bandwidth. After fiber, 5G is the only technology that will be trusted for its high bandwidth. 4G network users had to face lags and data loss issues; however, 5G users will not experience such problems because of the higher bandwidth.

Higher Data Rates

5G will offer an incredible 10Gbps, which means that the users experience a faster download and upload speed. 5G’s high data rate can convince fiber users to switch to 5G.

Improved Capacity

Fiber is a trusted future-proof technology because of its impressive capability of adapting to technological advancements and perform efficiently while supporting multiple high-demand apps and devices. 4G had limited capacity, but 5G will have the capacity to support multiple devices and HD applications all at once efficiently.

5G vs. Fiber: What’s the future?

It is nearly impossible to predict the future of either of the technologies right now. However, one thing is for sure that fiber is not ‘claiming’ anything. Fiber’s benefits are not only tried and tested, but fiber’s efficiency over any other network has been proven superior time and time again. Therefore, until 5G is launched and tested by its users, it is hard to say whether 5G will live up to its claims or will it fail to impress its users.
